Story::
Lequoia lowered her head to take a few more small sips from the pond. As she did she, she thought of her mother. As a foal, her mother had taught her that taking smaller sips was better for her than gulping water down. There were many times when the herd went without water and her mother made sure that when they found some that everyone got a drink. Tayanita taught them all that by taking smaller sips they would prevent stomach cramps. Her mother - the “official unofficial” Leader of the herd.
Lequoia raised her head to took around at the area surrounding the small pond. There were grasses here and berries for her to feed on and a cool breeze blew through every few minutes. The breeze felt wonderful and ruffled the feathers in her mane. She thought of the day she received those feathers and the quest she was now undertaking.
As a filly, Lequoia had met the humans that would give her the feathers and her name. They treated her differently than the other foals so she had developed a special bond with them, especially Zonta. On the dawning of her third year, the women had taken her to the lake and washed her with sweet smelling flowers. They had taken extra care with her mane & tail - including weaving the feathers into them. They had told her the eagle feathers would guide her on the journey she must leave on. She shook her head violently as she did not want to leave her mother or her herd. At a loud short snort from her mother she stopped and listened. “You are a mare now, not a filly any longer. You must seek your mate in the world. You will know him in your heart. When your quest is done, the two of you will return to us all and we will celebrate.”
That day had been twelve moons ago and yet Lequoia journeyed on. She had made many friends in different herds with her playful and friendly nature. She had met several fine stallions but none of them stirred her heart. She knew her mate would be something special - like her father had been. She had not really gotten to know her father, but she had learned from Zonta that her father had been respected in both the herd and human worlds.
Lequoia had only two memories of her father. The first was her favorite. One day her father had found a grassy area for the herd to rest in. He had kept watch as every one ate or drank and had started to settle down for the night. As Tayanita and she were settling in, her father had come and using his front legs had gently trod on the grass to flatten it down into a small soft bed for Lequoia. The grass had been so soft and cozy that as soon as she lay down she started drifting off to sleep. The last thing she saw was her father and mother nuzzling each other.
Lequoia’s other memory of her father was the terrible day they had lost him. She had been young and didn’t understand what was happening at first. She only knew that when her mother made the loud sound it was time to run. When they had stopped, her mother had turned to look back at her father. Tayanita had tried to block her young daughter’s view with her body, but Lequoia’s curiosity had her looking for her father. She had peek out from behind her mother’s legs and saw what was happening. To this day, whenever she heard coyotes howl she got chills down her spine.
Lequoia’s father had died protecting her mother and her. His courage and love had saved their whole herd, but her mother had lost a part of herself that day. Tayanita had never even glanced at another stallion. Her heart was with Enyeto in the Great Pasture Beyond. Lequoia hoped she’d be fortunate enough to find a mate her heart would love as strongly.
After a day’s rest by the pond, Lequoia took a few last sips of water, a few last nibbles of grass, and then turned to face the rising sun. Maybe today would be the day... The day her heart would lead her to her mate... The day she could start her journey home.
